Just for Kids
Welcome to Spaceship Earth
Did you know you live on a spaceship?
That’s right! It’s called Spaceship Earth and just like a man made spaceship, Earth is travelling through space on a very long journey. Earth has everything on it that you need to live and you can’t get off for more when you run out! Are you using more or the spaceship than you need to?
Find out how many planets it takes to feed and house you and your family by measuring your eco footprint: Click here to begin (you might need a parent to help with with some of the answers).

Playdough
2 cups plain flour
1 cup salt
2 tablespoons oil
4 teaspoons cream of tartar
2 cups water
Food colouring (optional)
Mix dry ingredients together in a large saucepan, add oil and gradually add water. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly. Once mixture begins to stiffen, tip out of saucepan and knead into a ball. Store in airtight container in fridge and it will keep for 3-4 uses.
Wax painting
Candle/wax crayon
Paper
Thin paint
Have your child draw a pattern, shape or letter (their name also works well) on paper with wax. Paint the paper entirely with sponge or brush or fingers. The image in wax will not soak up the paint so when dry, stands out like magic!
Goop
½ packet cornflour
½ cup of water
Food colouring (optional)
Mix water and food colouring (if using) into cornflour in a wide container with a lid. Good should have a thick consistency. Add more water if necessary. Explore the consistency with your child, using your fingers (put some in the bath and use your toes!). Will keep for a week if sealed.
Slime
½ box Lux flakes
4-6 cups of hot water
Food colouring (optional)
Electric mixer
Add hot water to soap flakes and beat with mixer – add more water for extra slime or less for firmer slime. Use for painting; place some on foil and use for sculpting; on a warm day take outside and use for body painting (check sensitive skin for reactions first).
Finger Paints
3 tablespoons cornflour
3 tablespoons cold water
1 cup boiling water
Food colouring (optional)
Mix cold water and cornflour in a wide container with a lid. Add boiling water and when colled and thick add fold colouring. (If you divide the mixture into smaller takeaway containers you can make lots of colours). Paint or make prints with hands and feet – purchase a roll of brown paper from the newsagents and have fun doing your own homemade wrapping paper for birthdays or Christmas.
