Tips for a naturally flea free and healthy pet

Sometimes our furry friends can be a handful! Here are some useful natural strategies for restoring your passion for your pet so you can live together in harmony …

• Use a turkey baster to give liquid medicine to your pet.

• Remove pet hair from upholstery by wiping the furniture with a slightly dampened sponge or a rubber glove or try wrapping masking tape around one hand with the sticky side out.

• Stop puppies from chewing by applying something like vicks vapour rub on items (like furniture legs). The smell should keep them away!

• Natural apple cider vinegar (in its natural form from a health food store, not the pasteurized version from the supermarket) is a natural antibiotic, antiseptic, and deodorant; helps with digestion and to remove tooth tartar; prevents tooth decay and hair loss (even mange), prevents and heals gum disease and skin problems; and will discourage fleas. Feeding one teaspoon to one tablespoon (depending on the size of the dog) of natural apple cider vinegar along with regular food can ease the pains of arthritis, help prevent skin allergies, and help clear up hot spots. Dogs can leave yellow spots in the lawn. May also correct the pH imbalance in your pet and and prevent yellow spots on the lawn!

• To keep fleas out of the doghouse, wash it with salty water. Spread cedar shavings under the dog's bed.

• Rubbing cornstarch into your pet’s coat prior to brushing or combing, will allow tangles or mats to be removed easier.

• A good remedy to keep fleas off of your cat is this simple solution: Slice a whole lemon very thin, including the peel, and add it to a pint of water. Heat this mixture right until the boiling point. Let the mixture sit overnight. In the morning, gently rub the mixture into your cat's fur and skin just to dampen it, not drench it. Do this once a month. This is a natural flea killer.

• You can also use brewer's yeast every day for skin problems involving fleas. Sprinkle a small amount of brewer’s yeast onto your pet’s food to keep fleas away. Sprinkle some rosemary leaves , powdered rosemary , or eucalyptus leaves under your pet’s bedding.

• Be careful – most essential oils can kill cats and garlic will make cats sick.
