In the Bathroom
- Combat mold and mildew with this natural Tea Tree spray.
Combine 2 teaspoons tea tree oil and 2 cups water in a spray bottle, shake to blend, and spray on problem areas. Do not rinse. Store in the spray bottle – lasts indefinitely. (The smell is initially quite strong but will dissipate in a few days.)
- Clean you ceramic tiles with a solution of 1/4-cup vinegar to one-gallon warm water. For the grout between your tiles, dip a toothbrush in full strength vinegar and gently scrub.
- Get rid of that nasty, grimy dirt that builds up around the faucets and sink hole by soaking paper towels in full strength vinegar and wrapping them around the fixtures. Let sit for one hour, and then clean as usual.
In the Kitchen
- Naturally clean oven grease and grime
Make a paste of one-cup vinegar and 1/4 cup eco friendly powdered laundry detergent.
Heat your oven for 5-minutes at 350 degrees and turn off.
Spread the paste around the oven, applying it more heavily to very greasy areas. Leave paste on for an hour, and then use a plastic spatula to gently scrape the dirt away.
Note - to prevent greasy buildup, dip a sponge in full-strength vinegar and wipe down all sides of the oven.
- Spring clean the kettle
Remove the lime coating on your teakettle by filling it with water and adding a half-cup of vinegar. Let it stand overnight, then rinse with clean water and dry.
- Shine the Silver
To clean silver, use a paste of 3 parts baking soda to one part water. Rub the paste onto each item, then rinse with warm water and dry with a soft cloth.
- For sparkly sinks
Apply full-strength vinegar with a sponge, then wipe clean to a sparkly shine.
Windows
Mix 1 cup vinegar with 5 cups water, and you've got a great window cleaner. (If you must have blue window cleaner, just a few drops of blue food coloring!)
Toys
Children's toys can be cleaned using 1/4 cup baking soda in 1 quart warm water. Submerge in this mixture (or wipe with a cloth dampened in it), then rinse with clear water. No need to use harsh disinfectants.
Pets
Clean up a puppy accident on your carpet by blotting up as much of the liquid as possible. Dab the spot with equal parts vinegar and warm, soapy water. Blot again with a clean, white cloth until no more liquid is absorbed. If your animal continues to stain in one place, try spraying vinegar on the spot. The smell should act as a deterrent.
To remove pet smells from carpet, pet bed or litterbox, sprinkle with baking soda. Let stand for at least fifteen minutes, and then vacuum. Repeat as needed.
